NOVEMBER 2009 TIP OF THE MONTH
Taking Care of Yourself
It is extremely important to take care of yourself mentally and physically, especially during times of stress. A number of articles have correlated highly stressful life events and periods of prolonged stress with illness. For infertility patients, this is seemingly a catch-22. A healthy body and mind are important in reaching the ultimate goals of the infertility treatment process. Yet anxiety and stress are a normal part of the infertility process as well. So what's an infertility patient to do? Here are some tips for keeping your stress levels as low as possible:
1) Counseling: Consider seeing a counselor who specializes in patients experiencing infertility issues.
2) Journaling: Journaling is sometimes a good way to get your anxieties out while keeping perspective on other important things in your life. It's OK to vent your frustrations but don't forget to emphasize the positive things in your life.
3) Exercise: Exercise can help to not only improve your physical health, but your emotional well-being. Yoga is one type of excercise which offers an excellent balance for body and mind.
4) Diet: Diet is very important in the infertility process. We recommend setting dietary goals and tracking them daily. An excellent resource for setting your unique dietary goals is The Fertility Diet by Jorge Chavarro, Walter C. Willett, and Patrick J. Skerrett.
5) Relaxation: There are a number of technical and not-so-technical ways to squeeze a bit of relaxation into your day including prayer, meditation, a warm mineral bath, regular massages, or simply avoiding the T.V., the phone, and the computer for a designated amount of time.
6) Rest: Those 8 hours are an absolute necessity for keeping body and mind ready for the tasks and challenges of the day.
7) Acupuncture: Many infertility patients (men and women) have found acupuncture to be useful in not only keeping your body in overall balance but in increasing fertility as well.
8) Support Groups: There are a number of support groups which can help to reassure you that you are not alone in your journey. If it is possible, you should try several and continue with the group which seems to have the best fit for you. There are also a number of online support groups if you live in a remote area or are reluctant to join a group in your area.
9) Spiritual support: Your faith community can be an important resource during times of stress. Your Pastor, Rabbi, or other religious leader can help to direct you spritually, and put you in touch with members of your faith community who can help.
10) Educate Yourself: We at The Infertility Assistant believe that an educated patient will have not only greater understanding of their own fertility issues, but lower levels of stress and ultimately greater odds of success.
